Understanding Clear Coats
Before applying any compound, you must evaluate the vehicle's clear coat. Hard clear coats require aggressive heavy-cut compounds, while softer paints might only need a medium cut to remove defects without inducing severe hazing.
Heavy Cut vs. Medium Cut
Heavy cutting compounds contain larger, more abrasive diminishing particles. Use them to remove deep scratches, severe oxidation, and sanding marks (1500-2000 grit).
- Heavy Cut: Best for deep scratch removal and hard paints.
- Medium Cut: Ideal for swirl removal and one-step corrections on medium/soft paints.
Always follow up a heavy cut with a finishing polish to refine the finish and restore maximum gloss.
